THE UNSTYLED HOUSE

Is teak brown furniture on its way out?

I’ve enjoyed mid-century styled teak furniture for a decade now. A couple of years after I cottoned on to this minimalist Danish style, the masses followed. And I think teak, walnut and mahogany will continue to remain popular throughout 2024 as we embrace the warmth and cosiness they bring to a room. The deepness of the patina brings an air of sophisticated, quiet, luxury.

These uncertain times call for homes that are nurturing and grounding. Natural materials are a great way of bringing the feeling of stability into our homes. The movement towards natural, earthy spaces that reflect our need to live authentically. Organically formed furniture and decorative items, with asymmetric curved lines will be a trend for 2024. TEXTURE IS SO IMPORTANT, and this is why natural materials like wood, bamboo. Linen, cotton and rattan will continue to soar.

Sustainability have never been such a prevalent concern and I think it is this in part that has taught us to look back to the past to re-use rather than discard. Ikea flat pack out….grandma’s table in. Thrifted furniture is all the rage. ‘Buying better’ is a newly coined phrase amongst influencers and I think this is fuelling the market for long lasting, quality pieces of furniture that exhibit great craftmanship.

In conclusion, whilst teak will remain popular look at rosewood, acacia and walnut as we move through 2024. Or you could try stained and ebonised finishes on lighter woods. Don’t be afraid to make a statement, and stay grounded!
